3 Pro-Tips for CGM Sensor Longevity and Accuracy

Updated: Mar 27

Preventing Sensor Failure and Irritation

A CGM is only as good as its application. To avoid "Sensor Error" messages and skin issues, follow these medical best practices.

The Site Selection Process

Both Dexcom and Abbott (Libre) recommend the back of the upper arm for adult patients. Avoid areas with scarring, tattoos, or excessive muscle, as the sensor needs to sit in the subcutaneous "fatty" layer to read interstitial fluid accurately.

Pro-Tip: If you are lean, use the "Pinch the Inch" method, gently pinch the skin to ensure you are inserting into fat, not muscle, which can cause pain and inaccurate readings.

Application Checklist

  • De-Grease: Use a 70% isopropyl alcohol pad to remove skin oils.

  • Dry Completely: Never apply a sensor to damp skin.

  • Rotation: Always move your next sensor site at least 1 inch away from the previous site to prevent lipodystrophy.
